PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Brazil, the world's fifth-largest and fifth-most populous country, boasts a diverse culture shaped by its varied geography and history. The Northeast region, crucial in Brazil's cultural and historical narrative, was where the Portuguese first encountered Indigenous peoples and where enslaved Africans labored on sugar plantations. This region's cultural traditions—music, dance, literature, and cuisine—are often seen as foundational to modern Brazilian culture. However, the Northeast is not just a relic of the past; it is a dynamic area adapting to contemporary political and technological changes.

The course "Brazil: Music, Culture, Environment" explores these themes through the human culture, art, and landscapes of the Northeast, particularly focusing on the state of Pernambuco. Students will engage with urban and rural areas, examining the intersection of environmental issues with religion, music, and industry. They will also explore the region's history, climate variations, and prehistoric sites in the state of Piaui. The course includes instruction in basic Brazilian Portuguese, workshops in a wide variety of music and dance traditions, interaction with local culture bearers and scholars, and exploration of some of the oldest human settlements in the Americas. Students will create a final creative project showcasing their knowledge of one of the traditions studied, either in the form of a podcast episode or a cordel (a folk literary tradition local to the Northeast of Brazil). No prior training in music or Portuguese is necessary to participate in this course.

CREDIT: Students receive the equivalent of one Holy Cross credit that can be used to satisfy a Common Area Requirement in Arts or Cross-Cultural Studies requirement. This course will be cross- listed in Music and Anthropology.
