HOLY CROSS SUMMER (MAYMESTER) PROGRAM
IN MADRID, SPAIN ~ 2018

Spanish Theater and the Cultural Horizon

FACULTY:  Holy Cross Professors Ellen Lokos and Professor Juan Iso (Madrid)

DATES: Departure from the U.S. on Friday, May 18, 2018 with arrival in Madrid on Saturday, May 19th.  Departure from Spain on Monday, June 18, 2018

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  Spanish Theater and the Cultural Horizon is a four-week immersive program that explores Spanish art and culture in Madrid.  The numerous cultural institutions of the city – the museums, galleries, and exhibits – serve as educational resources that enrich theatrical viewing.  Class sessions provide opportunities for contextualization and reflection, afternoon field trips offer exposure to major arts and cultural institutions, and evenings are spent watching some of the finest theatrical productions in the world, ranging from commercial offerings to radical experimentation.  Madrid becomes a site of exploration as students encounter the geography, architecture and people of this artistic world center.  The city’s rich cultural and historical destinations are easily accessible on foot from our centrally located hostel in Madrid’s “neighborhood of letters.”  The four-week Madrid residency is complemented by weekend excursions and day trips. The Madrid Maymester offers students the opportunity to dramatically improve their Spanish language skills and cultural literacy while they immerse themselves in the everyday life, arts, culture, and history of today’s Spain.  Study of theater is enhanced by trips to theaters, museums, churches, walking tours, dance lessons, etc.

CREDIT:  The program will count as one Holy Cross credit; the course satisfies the ARTS or LITERATURE common area requirement and can fulfill an academic deficiency.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT:  Spanish 301 or with Prof. Lokos's permission.

HOUSING and MEALS:  Students live at the Hostal Persal on the Plaza del Angel in Madrid’s famous literary area, the “Barrio de las letras.” They are conveniently located within walking distance of the city’s major attractions and landmarks including the most important museums, theaters, and excellent, well priced restaurants.

COSTS:  The estimated cost of the six-week program is approximately $6,200 - $6,700. The price includes tuition, housing, museum passes, tickets to cultural events, metro and bus tickets, and course-related excursions. NOT INCLUDED: transportation to and from Boston’s Logan airport, round-trip airfare, personal expenses, lunch and dinner. Students should expect to spend between $750-$1000 on meals. Very limited financial aid is available for this program.
