PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Spanish Theater and the Cultural Horizon
is a four-week immersive program that explores Spanish art and culture in Madrid. The numerous cultural institutions of the city – the museums, galleries, and exhibits – serve as educational resources that enrich theatrical viewing. Class sessions provide opportunities for contextualization and reflection, afternoon field trips offer exposure to major arts and cultural institutions, and evenings are spent watching some of the finest theatrical productions in the world, ranging from commercial offerings to radical experimentation. Madrid becomes a site of exploration as students encounter the geography, architecture and people of this artistic world center. The city’s rich cultural and historical destinations are easily accessible on foot from our centrally located hostel in Madrid’s “neighborhood of letters.” The four-week Madrid residency is complemented by weekend excursions and day trips. The Madrid Maymester offers students the opportunity to dramatically improve their Spanish language skills and cultural literacy while they immerse themselves in the everyday life, arts, culture, and history of today’s Spain. Study of theater is enhanced by trips to theaters, museums, churches, walking tours, dance lessons, etc.
The program will count as one Holy Cross credit; the course satisfies the ARTS or LITERATURE
common area requirement and can fulfill an academic deficiency.
